British observers gave the thumbs-up to Saturday’s presidential election in Somaliland.
They characterised the poll as a free and fair expression of the people’s will and commended the high turnout despite the Islamist threat from neighbouring Somalia.
The endorsement of Somaliland’s much delayed presidential election came from the London University team and Somaliland Focus in Britain.
Observation organisations, including the Electoral Institute of Southern Africa, opted against sending teams because of security fears.
Al Shabaab from Somalia, with which Somaliland severed ties in 1991, told people to stay at home – a warning which the majority of voters clearly did not heed.
